A new urban district, Marcelis Garden, was planned on the Ragheno site in Mechelen. Before construction of the new homes, offices and public spaces could begin, however, the site had to be remediated. It once housed a gasworks and a munitions factory (the so-called Bommenkot), which had heavily polluted the soil. Soil & Building carried out the first phase of the soil remediation, removing harmful chemicals such as PAHs, cyanide, benzene and mineral oil. The soil was excavated, screened and removed from the site. In total, around 40,000 m³ of soil was excavated, of which 25,000 tonnes were taken away for external treatment.
